Statistics and engineering, a perfect complement

The importance of statistics nowadays is not argued or doubted. Almost every professional university program includes in their curriculum, at least one statistics course. In Colombia and in many other countries, statistics are part of the curriculum of secondary education, in fact some topics are incorporated in primary education as well.

The dynamics of the modern world, demand that every citizen, in order to practice their rights and comprehend their environment, require literacy in statistics. In the specific fields of the formation of engineers, the pertinence is made more evident. In his affairs, the engineer must take decisions with incomplete information, in ambient of uncertainty, assuming risks, but not in an adventurous manner nor irresponsibly, he will do it with criteria and guiding himself through heuristics, many of which have as a purpose to make clearer ideas about the magnitude of the risks that are assumed and know which is the side that puts it conservatively close to safety.

Therefore, statistics constitutes itself into a true mine, from which the engineer can benefit from the appropriate heuristics to confront with very good possibilities of success the situation of comparing alternatives, with partial information, quantifying the risk of taking a bad decision.

Statistics offer an excellent menu for the engineer to dispose of the heuristics that can allow him to quantify the amount of resources that he must assign to the investment of information and the way to work with such information. This menu of navigation, is known in statistics as estimating of the size of a sample with the risk of failure when deciding with it in any way.

On the other hand the uncertainty or the poor knowledge of the situation, the engineer must dispense of heuristics that will allow him in some occasions to make trials at small scales, to precede the behavior of a system, anticipate it taking the adequate measures, filling up with arguments to favor a certain determined course of action.

As an example you could say that in specific fields of engineering, in which an inherent characteristic to the quality of a product is the time passed until the product fails or the duration of time between errors, it is required to know some of the parameters that guarantee a priori, the trustworthiness of the product or service or for the definition of politics of maintenance of equipment, for the definition of time of warranty, is really convenient to dispense of heuristics for the prediction of the liability, fertile ground of statistics through the theory of liability.
