Elizabeth Vargas Vargas studies at the systems engineering and computation school at the Universidad del Valle. Last year she was part of the group of scholarship holders from the German Student Interchange Service, DAAD and she completed an academic semester in the teutonic country which allowed her to grow professionally as well as personally. A few days ago, Elizabeth was selected to participate in an Innovative Internship, an event held out by Siemens enterprise and she is now once again in Germany to be a part of this wonderful and developful experience.
The Innovative Internship is a contest sponsored by Siemens enterprise. At this time, a total of 20 proposals for the development of medical technologies were received. Having one of the 20 selected proposals, Elizabeth will have the opportunity to work on her proposal with the help and input of Siemens' investigators, in a very stimulating and appropriate environment for a period of three months. This Internship will take place between June and September 2012.
Elizabeth told Ingenierias Informa some details about this great achievement and handed out and invitation to all students from our Engineering Faculty to come out and take part of these innovative contests.
1. How were you able to come in touch with such an important enterprise like Siemens?
I found some information about the contests requirements for the Innovative Internship on Facebook at the DAAD website. To participate for the scholarship I had to send an innovative proposal about the topic “The future of healthcare” and attached to it my resume. I sent a proposal about the fusion of medical images, then after a few weeks of waiting I found out I had been picked.
2. What exactly is included in the scholarship which you received?
The scholarship consists of a three month training opportunity as a trainee at an innovative campout in Erlangen, Germany. Siemens is charge of everything from travel expenses to accommodation and meals, all expenses paid.
3. What process will you develop on this Internship?
There's a group of topics to talk about with “The future of healthcare” and an interdisciplinary group from different nationalities. The idea is that each of them with their own experiences and backgrounds can give their own point of views to help in the design and development of the different topics through innovative ideas in the different disciplines and of course the implementation of prototypes.
4. What are some of your expectations and possibilities with this Innovative Internship?
It's interesting to take part of an innovative internship because it allows one to see the type of technologies in which the industry is focused on for the future and it's a great opportunity to bring this new knowledge back to Colombia. Additionally, I would like to go on record and say that they hold several internships throughout the year, so it would be great for others to participate.
5. How has your formation at the Universidad del Valle and the Faculty contributed to you reaching your academic and professional goals?
In one hand, I have the excellent academic formation which is offered to all of us which allows us to perform as good professionals from our respective areas. On the other hand, the support from our staff at the Systems Engineering and Computation School and the multimedia and vision lab which I belong to.
6. What`s the hardest thing about living in Germany?
I was there last year on the Young Engineer's scholarship, so I kind of new a little about the culture therefore re-adapting wasn`t so hard. However the winter … that is something I will never get used to.
7. Are you planning to come back to Colombia or to the Faculty in the near future?
Yes, I`m currently in my last semester of my career so my goal is to return and finish my career and graduate as a system's engineer by November.

Elizabeth Vargas Vargas estudia en Escuela Ingeniería de Sistemas y Computación de la Universidad del Valle. El año pasado hizo parte del grupo de becarios del Servicio Alemán de Intercambio Estudiantil, DAAD y realizó un semestre académico en país teutón, lo que le permitió crecer como profesional y como persona. Hace pocos días, Elizabeth fue seleccionada para participar en un Campamento de Innovación, un evento organizado por la firma Siemens y ahora se encuentra nuevamente en Alemania para hacer parte de esta experiencia de formación y desarrollo.
El Campamento de Innovación es un concurso organizado por la firma Siemens. En esta oportunidad fueron seleccionadas 20 propuestas para el desarrollo de tecnologías médicas. Como una de las 20 seleccionadas, Elizabeth tendrá la oportunidad de trabajar sobre su idea con la ayuda y asesoría de investigadores de la Siemens en un ambiente muy estimulante y apropiado durante un periodo de 3 meses. Este campamento se realizará entre junio y septiembre de 2012.
Elizabeth le contó a Ingeniería Informa detalles sobre este gran logro e lanzó una invitación para que más estudiantes de nuestra Facultad de Ingeniería se animen a participar de este tipo de concursos de innovación.
1. ¿Cómo lograste ese importante contacto con una empresa como SIEMENS?
La información sobre la convocatoria para participar en el Campamento de Innovación la encontré en la página del DAAD en facebook. Para participar por la beca debía enviar una propuesta de innovación sobre el tema "The Future of Healthcare" y adjuntar a ella mi hoja de vida. Envié una propuesta sobre fusión de imágenes médicas y después de algunas semanas recibí la noticia de haber sido seleccionada.
2. En qué consiste la beca que obtuviste?
La beca consiste en la oportunidad de realizar 3 meses como pasante en un campamento de innovación en Erlangen, Alemania. Siemens se encarga de los gastos de viaje, así como de acomodación y manutención durante ese tiempo.
3.¿ Qué procesos desarrollarás durante este campamento?
Hay un conjunto de temas relacionados con "The Future of Healthcare" y un grupo interdisciplinario de diferentes nacionalidades. La idea es que cada uno desde su formación y su perspectiva colabore con el desarrollo de los distintos temas a través de ideas innovadoras en las diferentes disciplinas y por supuesto implementación de prototipos.
4. ¿Cuáles son tus expectativas o posibilidades con este Campamento de Innovación?
Es interesante participar en un campamento de innovación porque permite ver en el tipo de tecnologías en las cuales se enfoca la industria en el futuro y es una gran oportunidad poder llevar ese conocimiento a Colombia. Adicionalmente, me gustaría decir que ellos hacen varios campamentos al año, entonces seria bueno que colocaras eso, para que más univallunos se animen a participar!
5.¿Cómo ha contribuido tu formación en la Univalle y en la Facultad para lograr tus proyecciones académicas y laborales?
Por un lado está la excelente formación académica que recibimos y que nos permite desempeñarnos como buenos profesionales en las respectivas áreas y por otro lado, el apoyo de los profesores de la EISC y del laboratorio de Multimedia y Visión al cual pertenezco.
6.¿ Qué fue lo más difícil de estar en Alemania?
Yo estuve acá el año pasado con la beca Jóvenes Ingenieros, entonces ya conocía un poco de la cultura y por lo tanto la re-adaptación no fue tan compleja. Pero el invierno... eso es algo a lo cual nunca me acostumbraré.
7. ¿Tienes proyecciones para regresar a Colombia o a la Facultad en el mediano plazo?
Si, estoy en el último semestre de mi pregrado entonces mi meta es llegar a terminar mi pregrado y a graduarme como ingeniera de sistemas en noviembre.
